Nivalis Nights Wiki

Is Nivalis Nights open world?

Not fully. The city is split into large districts that you walk freely, with loading screens when you travel between them. The studio says: “You will be able to explore certain areas/districts freely while other parts of the world are background environments.”

Three kinds of space

Inside a district

Open. “Within each district, you can freely explore everything, including the interiors of most of the businesses that make the city feel alive.”

Between districts

A load. The studio says “there will be loading screens when traveling between them”, and you make the trip by taxi, train or boat.

The rest of the skyline

Background. Parts of the city are there to be looked at, not walked through.

What the official map names

The studio’s tourist brochure labels five places on its city map: Skyhigh Gardens, Meridian Market, Your Home, Docks, Seaside Boardwalk. The studio calls the brochure an overview with plenty more to discover, so treat it as a highlights map rather than the full list. The districts page covers every area named so far.

More opens up as the story goes on

Not everything is available on the first day. “As you progress through the story, you’ll also unlock new locations to explore.” You can also buy restaurants, apartments and houses in other districts as your business grows.

How big is the map?

The studio has not given a size: no square kilometres, no walking time across, no count of districts. What it has described is how busy the city is. Thousands of characters keep their own daily routines, and those in districts you are not in are still tracked, with the studio simulating “what is needed to track their daily schedules in the background”. The city comes back to you where you left it, rather than resetting.

Getting around

You cannot drive. Districts are linked by HOVA taxis and trains, and you can pilot your own boat on the water around the city. The transport page covers each option and the fishing page covers the boat.

A hands-on preview of an early build found the same shape: the writer took a taxi through a cutscene and concluded the city was split into hub areas, “though the exact number and parameters of each one are still unclear”.
