Fishing in Nivalis Nights

In Nivalis Nights you fish from your own boat, which you take out from the docks, and you can do it in daylight, at sunset or at night. When you are tired, the boat doubles as a place to sleep.

A trip, start to finish

  1. Leave from the docks. The Docks are one of the five places labelled on the city map. There is one condition for using the water: “as long as you make friends with the people who know the docks best”. Who those people are, and exactly how you get the boat, is not known yet.
  2. Pick your hour. You can go out in daylight, at sunset or at night. How night fishing sits with the city curfew is not known yet.
  3. Check the sky. The studio’s advice for rainy days is plain: “we don’t recommend going out on the sea and rather stay in the city”.
  4. Stay out if you like. The boat is “the perfect place to rest after a long day at sea”, and you can spend the night on it.
  5. Bring it back to the kitchen. The catch goes to your restaurants; see below.

The fish are real, one by one

“Fishing is not based on random chance.” Each fish exists in the water as its own simulated creature. Hundreds can be on screen at once, and the studio simulates over 1,000 in total. They follow each other or your bait in shoals, so “the specific salmon you catch is the same one you saw in the water just moments before”.

Every fish also gives off a warm glow, and “officials claim they are perfectly safe to consume”. The glow is also why the studio had to optimize fish rendering, which matters if you are checking the PC requirements.

Why it matters for your restaurant

“Fishing will play an important role in managing your restaurants and their ingredients.” It is how you keep your fridges and freezers full.

The studio pitches fishing as the answer to empty shelves, with the perfect catch going into your sushi dishes, while vendors cover the rest. Ava comes with a hint: “She knows which docks have the best fish”. The food page has the dish categories, including fish and seafood.

It grows with you

Fishing is not fixed at the start. Over time it expands, “letting you discover new spots and species with your boat”. The morning newspaper can also announce the start of the fishing season, which shifts what the markets have and what it costs.

The studio sums up the boat in one line: “Your boat becomes both your tool and your refuge”.
